Diwali and Bandi Chhor Divas are this Sunday, November 8. The gurdwara and mandir are lit up, the whole family is together and there are boxes of mithai on every table. Nobody should feel guilty about enjoying that. But the week of Diwali is also when a lot of people with diabetes see their numbers go way up so heres how to enjoy it without paying for it later.
Tips for the festival week
- Pick your favorites. You don’t have to eat a piece of everything just because it’s there. Have the one you actually love, whether thats gulab jamun, pinni or barfi and skip the rest.
- Go small. Cut a piece in half and share it. You still get the taste.
- Don’t eat sweets on an empty stomach. Have them after a proper meal with dal, sabzi and some protein so your sugar doesn’t spike as fast.
- Drink water instead of soda or extra chai. Festival days often mean extra sweet drinks on top of the mithai.
- Walk after the big meal. Remember the after-meal walk? Diwali night is perfect for it, go look at the lights.
- Give fruit or dry fruit boxes. Not every gift has to be mithai and the elders with sugar in your family will appreciate it.
If you have diabetes
Keep taking your medicines like normal, don’t skip them because it’s a holiday. Check your sugar more often during the festival days if you can. And if you’re fasting or changing your eating a lot for any reason talk to your doctor first because some diabetes medicines need to be adjusted.
Happy Diwali and Bandi Chhor Divas to everyone celebrating 🪔
