Almost every Punjabi family has someone with sugar. A massi, a chacha, a grandparent who takes their pill every morning with chai. We kind of treat it like its normal but it doesn’t have to be.
The thin uncle problem
Doctors have known for a while that South Asians get type 2 diabetes earlier than a lot of other groups and at lower body weights. Someone who looks thin or average can still be at high risk. Part of the reason is where we store fat. South Asians tend to carry more fat around the belly and around the organs even when the scale looks fine and that kind of fat makes it harder for the body to use insulin.
Because of this the American Diabetes Association says Asian Americans should get checked for diabetes at a lower BMI (23 instead of 25) than other people.
Most people don’t know they have it
Early diabetes usually has no symptoms at all. When symptoms do show up they can look like:
- Being thirsty all the time
- Peeing a lot especially at night
- Feeling tired for no reason
- Blurry vision
- Cuts that heal slowly
Lots of people only find out years later when damage to the eyes kidneys or nerves has already started.
The good news
Type 2 diabetes can often be prevented or delayed. A simple blood test called an A1C tells you where you stand. Under 5.7 is normal, 5.7 to 6.4 is prediabetes and 6.5 or higher is diabetes. If you’re in the prediabetes range thats actually your chance to turn things around with small changes in food movement and sleep.
Over the next few weeks we’re going to talk about some of those small changes, starting with the one in your cup.
When to see a doctor: if you’re over 35, have family history of diabetes or have any of the symptoms above ask your doctor for an A1C test. It’s a quick blood draw and you don’t need to fast for it.
This post is for general information and isn’t medical advice. Talk to your doctor about what’s right for you.
